Classics by Design: H of H Playbook and The Trojan Women: A Comic in Art and Commerce.Patrice Rankine - 2023 - Classical Antiquity 42 (2):263-270.
This essay investigates the linguistic, artistic, and typographical dimensions of Anne Carson’s H of H Playbook and Trojan Women by Euripides: A Comedy. I argue that graphic design and design-thinking principles provide a useful and unexplored theoretical framework for deciphering these books, given the often-complex relationship in them between image and words, and sometimes even words presented in different typeface and handwriting. Carson worked in graphic design for a time, and as a poet, words – and metaphor, specifically – are (...)

Slow wave sleep and recollection in recognition memory.Agnès Daurat, Patrice Terrier, Jean Foret & Michel Tiberge - 2007 - Consciousness and Cognition 16 (2):445-455.
Recognition memory performance reflects two distinct memory processes: a conscious process of recollection, which allows remembering specific details of a previous event, and familiarity, which emerges in the absence of any conscious information about the context in which the event occurred. Slow wave sleep and rapid eye movement sleep are differentially involved in the consolidation of different types of memory. The study assessed the effects of SWS and REM sleep on recollection, by means of the “remember”/”know” paradigm. Subjects studied three (...)

The last third of the twentieth century was a time of great change within the humanities, as new directions of study and intense interest in methodology challenged traditional approaches in even the most conservative fields and found practical expression in the growth of institutional structures intended to foster innovative and interdisciplinary approaches. One of the results of this academic self‐consciousness was an increased interest in the history of scholarship. Stephen Dyson has attempted to provide a history of classical archaeology as (...)

Rethinking Rationality: From Bleak Implications to Darwinian Modules.Richard Samuels, Stephen Stich & Patrice D. Tremoulet - 1999 - In Richard Samuels, Stephen Stich & Patrice D. Tremoulet (eds.), Rethinking Rationality: From Bleak Implications to Darwinian Modules. Springer Verlag. pp. 21-62.
There is a venerable philosophical tradition that views human beings as intrinsically rational, though even the most ardent defender of this view would admit that under certain circumstances people’s decisions and thought processes can be very irrational indeed. When people are extremely tired, or drunk, or in the grip of rage, they sometimes reason and act in ways that no account of rationality would condone. About thirty years ago, Amos Tversky, Daniel Kahneman and a number of other psychologists began reporting (...)

The Travail of Nature : The Ambiguous Ecological Promise of Christian Theology(Theology and the Sciences).H. Paul Santmire (ed.) - 1991 - Fortress Press.
The Travail of Nature shows that the theological tradition in the West is neither ecologically bankrupt, as some of its popular and scholarly critics have maintained, nor replete with immediately accessible, albeit long-forgotten, ecological riches hidden everywhere in its deeper vaults, as some contemporary Christians, who are profoundly troubled by the environmental crisis and other related concerns, might wistfully hope to find. This is why it is appropriate to speak of the ambiguous ecological promises of Christian theology.

Motion Perception and the Temporal Metaphysics of Consciousness.H. Pollock & S. Strong - 2021 - Journal of Consciousness Studies 28 (5-6):79-101.
This paper defends a 'punctivist' conception of consciousness from recent attacks by Ian Phillips and Matthew Soteriou. As we intend it, 'punctivism' is the view that a subject's experience over some interval is determined by their experiential states at each instant during it. Phillips and Soteriou both offer ingenious arguments purporting to show that the punctivist is unable to make sense of motion perception; and that only by adopting an 'holistic' conception -- whereby a subject's instantaneous experiences are determined by (...)

The nature of measurement, and the true value of a measured quantity.H. Kirkham, A. Riepnieks, M. Albu & D. Laverty - 2018 - 2018 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (I2MTC).
The words 'true value' assume an existential relationship with the thing being measured. There is assumed to exist some aspect of the thing being measured that is independent of its relationship to the person who is interested in the result of the measurement. Yet measurement is a response to the need of an observer to know something about the real world. There is therefore an epistemological aspect to measurement. Some aspect of measurement has to do with the observer as a (...)

Early Psychoanalytic Religious Writings.H. Newton Malony & Edward P. Shafranske (eds.) - 2021 - Boston: Brill | Rodopi.
_Early Psychoanalytic Religious Writings_ presents, in one edited volume, many of the foundational writings in the psychoanalytic study of religion. These translated works by Abraham, Fromm, Pfister, and others, complement Freud’s seminal contributions and provide a unique window into the origins of psychoanalytic thinking.

  23. A functional taxonomy of normative conflict.H. Hamner Hill - 1987 - Law and Philosophy 6 (2):227-247.
In this paper I argue for three theses. First, most philosophical analyses of the problem of normative conflict, being based on the impossibility-of-joint-compliance test for conflict, are inadequate. Second, expanding on suggestions made by H. L. A. Hart and Stephen Munzer, I develop an understanding of normative conflict which is not tied to the concept of obedience. Such an understanding of normative conflict is expressly functional: normative conflicts arise when one norm interferes with the intended functioning of another. Third, working (...)
